CHAPTER FIFTEEN

“So, I have three siblings?” Tabitha asked as Jess gave her a CliffsNotes version of what had happened. She had decided it was best that her daughter heard the story from her mother, rather than letting the tabloids’ and newspapers’ conjecture on the events put a negative spin on who and what her other mother had been.

“Well, they will be your siblings once the adoption goes through. Technically, one is a full sibling and two are cousins, but all of them are related to you,” Jess explained. It had been complicated, but she was pleased with how well the teen was taking it.

“It’s a good thing we are looking for another house then, because we’ll need a bigger one,” Tabitha said knowingly. She was sad she would have to move away from Sue and her other friends but excited about her younger siblings. Jess had placated her with the promise to buy that cabin her mother and Sue’s parents had found that weekend so long ago. Having to wait until the Feds were done with her had been a blessing. She had gotten a real bargain on the cabin by waiting until the end of the season, just before winter set in. Vacations with the two families, Charlie and Phillip, and even Bill and his family were already being tentatively planned for next year.

“You aren’t upset?” Jess worried for the umpteenth time how Tabitha would take learning about the younger children or what had happened to Lena.

“No, Mom. It’s not their fault. This Chloé chick sounds like a real work of art,” she said, using a slang term she’d picked up. “I bet Mom never knew what hit her, and by then, she was so involved she couldn’t find a way out.” Tabitha thought for a moment and asked, “Are you upset?” She looked at Jess, worried about how she was handling everything.

“I was hurt and angry when I first figured it out.” As far as everyone was concerned, that happened over a year after Lena’s death and not a moment before. “I was hurt, but I also think your mom got in out of her depth. I believe Chloé manipulated her until she didn’t know how to get out.” She wasn’t going to point out that Lena had to know how deeply she was in once the children were involved. Only Lena could have signed out the vial of sperm they had stored in the cryobank. She had to have given the sperm to Chloé willingly. Jess wasn’t going to mention how lovely the house in Kanne had been or how happy Lena had looked in the pictures she kept from that house. She wouldn’t mention any of that to her daughter. Eventually, her smart teen would figure out more than she was willing to discuss right now. “I loved your mom. Never forget that.”

Jess was pleasantly surprised when Tabitha gave her a big hug. “I know you did, Mom. I loved her too. It’s all just so unfair,” she stated sadly.
